Saturday 7th January 2012 - En-route to South Georgia - Overcast most of the day, water choppy but not too much. Cold and windy outside

This morning we got another sleep in to 0730 with breakfast at 0800.  At the exact same time as breakfast we passed by Shag Rocks – a small outcrop of barren, jagged rocks with thousands of Shag’s nesting on them.  Apparently this is the calmest it’s ever been going past these rocks.  It was strange seeing nothing for more than 24hrs and the first piece of land we see is a small outcrop in the middle of the ocean (its still part of the Andes Mountain Range).

After breakfast I went outside and watched the many birds flying around and saw a Humpback whale fluking and many Fur Seals playing in the water.  We saw our first iceberg today as well.  It was spotted around 1000 off in the distance and we were heading straight for it.  At 1100 I went to Dag’s lecture on Shore Whaling Stations of South Georgia.  By the time that had finished at 1200, we were going right by the iceberg on the starboard side.  There were a few penguins sitting on the flattest part.  It’s my first ever ‘real’ iceberg seen floating in the ocean…no doubt there will be many more to come.

Lunch was really yummy today.  Mushroom soup with chicken pot pie and salad and a really delicious chocolate cake for dessert.  I had 3 desserts!  Straight after lunch, Mandeep, Sarah and I had a crash course in using lightroom with Hugh.  Then I had to go and have a sleep because I am still really tired.  I got up at 1700 and went out the front of the ship and watched the many different species of seabirds flying around – Petrels, Albatross, Terns and Prions.  There were also many Fur Seals as well.  I had fish for dinner and they had chocolate cake for dessert it was one of the best chocolate cakes I have ever eaten.  I ate 3 pieces it was so good.  After dinner we went out on the deck as the ship did a cruise around Right Whale Bay and the Bay of Isles before heading off to Salisbury Plains which is where we will start from in the morning.
We loose another hour tonight as we have to put our clocks forward one hour.
